What do I do for my fees? For a manuscript set in the same format an agent would expect (contact me for specifics) I charge per page -- depends on the amount of work involved. Many editors/coaches break their services up into reports on dialogue or characterization or plot -- etc -- and charge a fee for each component -- I do not do this. My reports cover all of the areas I feel need attention -- and usually include reports on dialogue, characterization, pace, tension, plot -- and other points of craft as necessary. I've found that weak characterization often includes weak dialogue -- it is almost impossible to address one without addressing the other -- to break these elements up and make two reports seems silly.
For a full edit the lowest fee is $5 per page for a novel-length manuscript -- the fee goes up from there depending on the complexity of the job. I always consult with the client when I think the manuscript will need more than a 'standard edit'. For a 'read through' -- no editing -- with a short report or verbal report the fee is $2 per page. The client pays shipping/postage. I do my editing on the page with a pencil -- so a printed copy is necessary. The client pays for printing charges (fair market) if the manuscript is sent to me on disk or via Internet (check with me in advance before sending a disk). For short fiction -- fees are variable depending on the amount of editing needed.
For the fees clients receive some or all of the following:
- Content/Substantive editing
- Line or copyediting
- Written evaluation/report
- Read-through and evaluation (no page editing)
- Instructional material
- Personalized list of agents or publishers
- Pre-Editing Consultation
- Post-Editing Consultation
- On-going coaching
- Editing of revisions for additional charge
- Bibliography or Reading List
I do all the editing myself -- I do not farm it out to others. I don't use a template or stock explanations of craft or marketing. Each report is written for each project and is addressed specifically to clients and their needs.
